    This course is designed for dental professionals seeking a comprehensive refresher on the safe and effective administration of nitrous oxide. Intended for continuing education only, it does not provide certification or initial authorization to administer nitrous oxide.

    Emphasis is placed on patient assessment, indications and contraindications, equipment function, administration techniques, monitoring, and documentation. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of sedation stages and planes, risk management strategies, and post-procedure care to support safe clinical decision-making and patient-centered care. The course is designed to reinforce best practices and promote patient safety across diverse dental settings.

    What will I learn?

    Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
    1. Explain the pharmacologic properties and physiologic effects of nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation in dental patients.
    2. Identify indications, contraindications, and relative contraindications for nitrous oxide use based on medical history and clinical findings.
    3. Recognize the stages and planes of anesthesia associated with nitrous oxide sedation and distinguish between safe and unsafe patient responses.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of nitrous oxide delivery systems, including flowmeters, scavenging systems, and infection control requirements.
    5. Apply appropriate titration techniques to achieve effective analgesia while maintaining patient consciousness and safety.
    6. Monitor patients receiving nitrous oxide sedation by assessing respiratory patterns, behavioral cues, and physiologic responses throughout treatment.
    7. Implement post-sedation oxygenation and recovery protocols to prevent diffusion hypoxia and ensure complete patient recovery.
    8. Document nitrous oxide administration accurately and thoroughly in accordance with professional standards and regulatory expectations.
    9. Evaluate patient responses during sedation and adjust nitrous oxide levels appropriately within the clinician’s scope of practice.
