Course Description:
This course is designed for dental professionals seeking a comprehensive, hands-on refresher in the safe and effective administration of local anesthesia. Intended for continuing education only, it does not provide certification or initial authorization to administer local anesthesia.
Participants will review the science and clinical practice of local anesthesia, including techniques, contraindications, systemic complications, and management of medical emergencies related to local anesthesia, as well as an overview of dental office emergencies. This course reinforces evidence-based best practices, helping participants strengthen their clinical knowledge, confidence, and ability to ensure patient safety and comfort.
Participants will review the science and clinical practice of local anesthesia, including techniques, contraindications, systemic complications, and management of medical emergencies related to local anesthesia, as well as an overview of dental office emergencies. This course reinforces evidence-based best practices, helping participants strengthen their clinical knowledge, confidence, and ability to ensure patient safety and comfort.
What are the course prerequisites?
Students must be a current licensed Tennessee dentist or Tennessee dental hygienist with local anesthesia certification.
Will I need to show proof of local anesthesia certification?
We will use your name and license number to verify your licensure and local anesthesia certification through the Tennessee Board of Dentistry's website prior to course participation.
What will I learn?
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the neurophysiology of pain and the mechanism of action of local anesthetics.
2. Identify legal and documentation requirements for safe anesthetic practice.
3. Compare and contrast pharmacological properties of common dental anesthetics and vasoconstrictors.
4. Select appropriate anesthetic agents and dosages based on patient-specific factors, including medical history and risk status.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of proper armamentarium, needle handling, and injection preparation.
6. Review maxillary and mandibular injection techniques, including landmarks, insertion depths, and troubleshooting failed anesthesia.
7. Recognize contraindications and manage systemic complications and local adverse events such as hematoma, trismus, paresthesia, and allergic reactions.
8. Apply evidence-based strategies to improve patient comfort and safety during anesthetic administration.
9. Apply evidence-based strategies for managing medical emergencies related to anesthesia.
10. Review a general emergency preparedness plan for dental office settings.

How is the course organized?
This hybrid course includes a 2-hour recorded lecture and, 8 hours of in-person lab activities and live patient practice with a student partner. After completion of the course, you will receive your CE certification to download/print.
Who will I be in class with?
Students in this course join one of our certification course clinical sessions alongside hygienists who are completing their initial local anesthesia certification. This means your partner during the hands-on portion may be giving injections for the first time. We find this creates a supportive, collaborative environment. All injections, by every student, are supervised by the instructors at all times. So you can feel confident in the safety and quality of your experience.
What materials do I need to bring to the course?
Bring clinical attire including safety glasses, headlight, lab coat, close toed shoes, and latex free gloves if necessary. In addition, bring three sterilized anesthetic syringes.
