This course is designed for dental professionals seeking a comprehensive refresher on the safe and effective administration of local anesthesia. Intended for continuing education only, it does not provide certification or initial authorization to administer local anesthesia.
Participants will review the science and clinical practice of local anesthesia, including techniques, contraindications, systemic complications, and management of medical emergencies related to local anesthesia, as well as an overview of dental office emergencies. This course reinforces evidence-based best practices, helping participants strengthen their clinical knowledge, confidence, and ability to ensure patient safety and comfort.
Participants will review the science and clinical practice of local anesthesia, including techniques, contraindications, systemic complications, and management of medical emergencies related to local anesthesia, as well as an overview of dental office emergencies. This course reinforces evidence-based best practices, helping participants strengthen their clinical knowledge, confidence, and ability to ensure patient safety and comfort.
What will I learn?
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the neurophysiology of pain and the mechanism of action of local anesthetics.
2. Identify legal and documentation requirements for safe anesthetic practice.
3. Compare and contrast pharmacological properties of common dental anesthetics and vasoconstrictors.
4. Select appropriate anesthetic agents and dosages based on patient-specific factors, including medical history and risk status.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of proper armamentarium, needle handling, and injection preparation.
6. Review maxillary and mandibular injection techniques, including landmarks, insertion depths, and troubleshooting failed anesthesia.
7. Recognize contraindications and manage systemic complications and local adverse events such as hematoma, trismus, paresthesia, and allergic reactions.
8. Apply evidence-based strategies to improve patient comfort and safety during anesthetic administration.
9. Apply evidence-based strategies for managing medical emergencies related to anesthesia.
